One of the characteristics of our meal kit delivery service is that we only offer plant-based recipes. But what does this entail exactly and is this not boring? The answer on the last question is NO! If you plan your meals right, you will notice that the options are endless, and that you can actually put a surprisingly delicious and nutrient meal on the table every evening.
When you follow a plant-based diet, your focus is on foods that primarily come from plants. Anything like fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds, oils, whole grains, legumes, beans… name it! It doesn’t necessarily mean that you are a vegetarian or vegan and completely exclude meat or dairy from your daily consumption pattern, but you do prioritise foods from plant sources.
Within the plant-based diet there’s the whole foods, plant-based diet, which takes it just a step further by prioritising only whole plant foods that are either raw or minimally processed. Here comes a difference with the vegan lifestyle for example: you can find a lot of processed vegan food which wouldn’t fit in this diet. This doesn’t mean though that all vegans eat these processed foods, you also find whole-foods vegans.
But why follow a plant-based diet?
Eating plant-based meals has different scientifically proven benefits. One of them is that it can prevent, control and sometimes even reverse many diseases. Focusing on foods derived from plants have also proven higher energy levels, better fitness results and an easier weight-management. If you choose the right foods, you basically don’t have to count calories and be afraid of weight increase.
Another very welcome benefit of following a plant-based diet is that you significantly reduce your environmental footprint. Imagine the amount of land that’s needed for animals to graze – or actually even worse: the amount of land that’s needed to grow crops to feed the animals. Not even talking about the water quantities these crops need to grow. And yes, water and land are scarce, so let’s do our bit by choosing our food consumption wisely!
While planning your meals, just make sure that you receive all daily required proteins, vitamins and minerals. They are very important to maintain your muscle mass, to give you strong bones, a healthy skin and a strong immune system. The plant-based diet offers you plenty of options to meet the standards, but if you feel like you’re short on something, take the necessary supplements.
